Important Bird Areas of European Union
importance in Estonia
The main goal of the book of Important Bird Areas of European Union importance in Estonia is to help the process of selecting Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in Estonia to fulfil the requirements and one of the main provisions of the EC Birds Directive (79/409/EEC). The designation of a network of SPAs should guarantee the viability of populations of bird species listed in Annex I of the Directive, as well as for regularly occurring migratory bird species in the European Union. As the Birds Directive does not give criteria for the selection of the SPAs, BirdLife International’s Important Bird Areas ‘C’ criteria was used for identification of IBAs of EU Importance. The book provides information on the site selection process and the species used for site selection, and gives detailed information on each IBA that should be considered as candidate SPA in Estonia.
