The aim of the project is to monitor the population dynamics and breeding success of our birds of prey. All the Estonian birds of prey (over 20 breeding species) are under nature protection. The state of their populations reflects the general condition of our environment (e.g. the effects of poisonous chemicals or extensive logging). Each year over ten 10x10 km plots are examined thoroughly. The examination of so large a territory may prove to be too big workload for one observer only, therefore it is recommended that such areas would be shared between 2 to 5 observers. The observations take place in several stages: the mapping of the nesting territories on the basis of the owls’ callings and hawks’ display flights; the searching of the nests and the closer examination of the plots during the breeding season; also the taxation of the area during the period when the young learn to fly. It is not always necessary to undergo all the three stages of observation. The results are presented on a special form. We also appreciate very much all the notifications about the nesting evidence of eagles and other rare birds of prey in Estonia.
